Dental Health and Food: Learning to Eat Better

My intense love for candy, cakes, and everything in between started as a child. I simply couldn't go one day without something sweet to eat. But my love for all things sweet took a toll on my teeth. My dentist diagnosed me with seven cavities, each one a different size and depth. After sitting through four long dental appointments, I decided to make a change. I now monitor my diet and only eat things that benefit my oral health. I'm here to help you take better care of your teeth. My blog offers tips on how to improve your diet, maintain good oral hygiene, and many other topics. Hopefully, you can learn to overcome your bad habits just as I did. Good luck with your future dental health.

Are You a Good Candidate for Dental Implants?

by Eric Bailey

Are you interested in the use of dental implants to either replace a missing tooth or to help support your dentures? If so, you may be wondering whether or not you would be a good candidate for this procedure. While this is a decision that will ultimately need to be made between you and your dentist, the information below can help you to get a much better idea of whether or not you are a good candidate for dental implants.

Your Overall Health

Dental implants do require oral surgery and will require the use of a general anesthetic. In order to help minimize the risk of complications during or after surgery, your dentist will require you to be in good overall health before undergoing this procedure. If you are currently under a doctor's care for any serious conditions, it is important to share this information with your dentist before moving forward with the implant procedure.

Bone Density In Your Jaw

Dental implants are placed directly into your jawbone. Since these implants rely on the jaw to provide strength and stability, it is important that you have ample bone density to provide this support. If you have suffered bone loss as a result of the aging process of advanced gum disease, you may not be eligible for dental implants. If the loss of bone density is minor, your dentist may be able to correct this problem with the use of a bone graft. This procedure would need to be completed before you can move forward with getting your implants.

Prefer A Permanent Solution

Dental implants are considered a permanent solution to tooth loss since these implants will last for many years without needing to be replaced. In many cases, these implants can last for the rest of a patient's life. Consequently, it is important to ensure that you are committed to the long-term use of dental implants. If you are hoping to use a different tooth replacement solution in the future, dental implants are not the right choice for you. However, if you are looking to permanently address the issue of missing teeth, you could be an ideal candidate for dental implants.

A Final Thought

If you believe that you could be a good candidate for this procedure after reading the information above, you will need to schedule an appointment with your dentist. In order to make a final determination regarding your candidacy for dental implants, your dentist will need to complete a full exam which includes a set of dental x-rays.
