My intense love for candy, cakes, and everything in between started as a child. I simply couldn't go one day without something sweet to eat. But my love for all things sweet took a toll on my teeth. My dentist diagnosed me with seven cavities, each one a different size and depth. After sitting through four long dental appointments, I decided to make a change. I now monitor my diet and only eat things that benefit my oral health. I'm here to help you take better care of your teeth. My blog offers tips on how to improve your diet, maintain good oral hygiene, and many other topics. Hopefully, you can learn to overcome your bad habits just as I did. Good luck with your future dental health.

Three Things You Can Do With Invisalign That You Can't Do With Standard Braces

by Eric Bailey

Getting straighter teeth is a great way to improve your appearance and confidence, but getting there is sometimes not a great experience. If you're trying to decide between invisible braces and standard braces, keep these three things in mind that you'll be able to do with invisible ones - but not standard braces.

Teeth Whitening

Keeping your teeth looking nice is entirely possible with invisible braces. Since you can take them off whenever you want, certain cosmetic dentistry treatments, like tooth whitening, are indeed possible. You should be able to use whitening kits at home, too, though you should always ask your dentist to be on the safe side.

Tooth whitening isn't possible with standard braces, as they're in the way and too difficult to remove to be worth it. To make matters worse, some people end up with staining on their teeth after their braces come off because plaque has gathered around the braces brackets.

Certain Foods

It's an unfortunate fact that when you get standard braces, there are some things you have to give up. Among these are some of your favorite foods.

Overly crunchy food, like nuts, crunchy peanut butter, and certain vegetables, are often off the list when you wear standard braces. Sticky foods also have to be given up, so say goodbye to treats like peanut brittle, sticky candy, and gum.

With invisible braces, it's recommended that you take them off before eating. The great thing about this is that it means you can eat literally anything you want while you're having your teeth straightened. Simply clean your teeth after eating and put your invisible braces back on.

Play Contact Sports

Lastly, there are certain activities that are often off-limits with traditional braces. Among these are contact sports and anything else with potential trauma to the face. After all, if traditional braces suffer a sudden blow, the wires could snap and potentially poke you on the inside of the mouth. This isn't something that anyone wants to go through, so dentists generally recommend that you stay away from anything dangerous like sports, roller coasters, and so on while wearing traditional braces. But once again, you can simply take your invisible braces off while you engage in these activities.

Wearing braces doesn't mean that you have to give up doing the things that you enjoy, eating what you enjoy, and turning your back on your appearance. Go with invisible braces, like Invisalign, and continue to enjoy your life the way that you already do.
