My intense love for candy, cakes, and everything in between started as a child. I simply couldn't go one day without something sweet to eat. But my love for all things sweet took a toll on my teeth. My dentist diagnosed me with seven cavities, each one a different size and depth. After sitting through four long dental appointments, I decided to make a change. I now monitor my diet and only eat things that benefit my oral health. I'm here to help you take better care of your teeth. My blog offers tips on how to improve your diet, maintain good oral hygiene, and many other topics. Hopefully, you can learn to overcome your bad habits just as I did. Choosing The Right Dental Professional To Place A Dental Implant

by Eric Bailey

In the past, people would have to rely on bridges, partial dentures, or full dentures when missing one or several teeth. There have been advancements made in dental restoration, and dental implants are becoming an increasingly popular option for people who want to replace missing teeth. Dental implants prevent bone loss in the jaw, are strong and durable, and look very much like natural teeth. If you are interested in dental implants, use the following tips to choose the right dental doctor.

Take Training Into Consideration

Dental implants can be placed by oral surgeons, periodontists, and dentists. Generally, oral surgeons and periodontists go through advanced training on placing dental implants during their general schooling and training. General dentists typically do not receive training on placing dental implants during dental school, but many dentists have opted to go through advanced post-graduate training to learn how to properly place dental implants. If you plan to have a general dentist place your dental implants, make sure you ask about what kind of training he or she has completed.

Ask About Experience

Oral surgeons regularly complete advanced surgeries, such as placing dental implants. Periodontists and general dentists may have the advanced training needed to place dental implants, but not all dentists and periodontists perform the procedure on a regular basis. Before selecting a dentist or periodontist to place a dental implant, ask them how many dental implant surgeries they have done in the last year and when was the last time they placed a dental implant in a patient.

Pay Attention to Reviews

Dental implants require a significant financial investment, and the placement of a dental implant is also a major oral surgery. Thus, it makes sense to want to go to the best oral surgeon, periodontist, or general dentist who is trained in placing dental implants. In this day and age, the internet makes it easy to read reviews about dental practices from past patients. Take the time to read the reviews to see what past patients have to say about their experience having dental implants placed.

Take a Look at Before & After Photos

Most dental professionals who place dental implants keep before and after photographs for potential patients to look at. Before making a decision about who will be placing your dental implant, don't be afraid to ask if you can see the before and after images so you can get a better image of the type of work that a dental profession performs.
